Dealing with Stress in College/Work

Updated on January 4, 2014

Stress and College

Stress and college tend to go hand and hand. You can't really make it through the pressures of college without feeling some type of stress. Many students are juggling school, work, and extra activities. With only 24 hours in the day it is extremely hard to fit everything in your schedule. You may feel like you don't have enough time to do simple tasks such as cooking, laundry, and etc. With all this piling up college we tend to get very stressed and even the little things set us off. However, what really matters is how we deal with that stress and how we turn a negative situation into a positive one. We can't let stress affect us negatively or ruin our day, week, or year. We must find ways to beat our stress and stay calm, cool, and collected.

Stay Healthy

I know it is always easier to pick something up, but it is important that you eat healthy. Make sure that you are always doing your best when it comes to your eating habits. You can't let your well-balanced diet slip because your feeling stressed and overwhelmed. It is especially important to make sure to try and choose healthy choices when feeling stressed along with getting a good night's sleep (8 hours at least), and exercise.

Exercising is what really gets your blood flowing and it becomes more important when your body is fighting with you.Exercise will help ensure that you have natural energy to get you through the rest of the day and keep your body running efficiently. Efficiency is what is going to help you better manage your time and deal with surprise situations. Also, exercising will help to make you feel better about yourself once you see all the progress you've made and the impact it has made on your body and your mind. Maybe you should think about doing some type of Yoga or Tai Chi. Something that is going to be relaxing and put your mind at ease. They are excellent ways to beat stress while staying healthy.

Writing

I know this isn't high school, but I promise you writing has gotten me through some of the toughest and most stressful times of my life. I feel so free and open like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders and everything is right with the world.I keep a personal journal that I carry around with me 90% of the time. When I've had a rough day, I sit down and write. I just let all my feelings pour out onto the page and half way through I usually find myself feeling calm and peaceful. Regardless of what type of day I've had and no matter what had went on earlier I feel relieved and calm. Some how writing just seems to put me at peace and put my mind at ease. To be honest, it is way better than calling up a friend to vent. Usually I find myself dwelling on the topic more and more even after my vent.Writing helps to bring me to my own world and leaving me free to do as I please and say exactly what I want and without dealing with the pressures of everyday life.

Fresh Air

When you are stressed and writing or exercising won't help you should just simply take a break. Regardless of whatever you are doing, just go get some fresh air. Sometimes a breathe of fresh air is all you really need. Take a walk outside and enjoy your surroundings. Find a local playground and swing on the swing set. I know we are too old for that, but it really is calming. No matter how hot or cold it is I promise you a nice break outside will do you some good. You need a break and your body needs a break from the stress and the pressure. Walks normally help to put your mind at ease. Being away from it all even only just for a few minutes is enough to put you into prospective and make you understand that things are only as bad as you make them. Next time your feeling stressed, just go outside and take a nice little break. I promise you won't be disappointed.
